A resident of Rapid City since 1997, I lived briefly in Minnesota for college before moving my young family back to the Black Hills in 2004. My husband, Brandon, and I have been married for 17 years and have owned and operated Spore Creative - a full-service web development and marketing firm - since then.
I was gifted a quality home education by my parents, David & Kay LaFrance, and was inspired to teach my oldest son, Christian, at home, for preschool and kindergarten. Halfway through his kindergarten year, in tears almost every day, I realized that I was cut out to be his mom, not his teacher, and enrolled him at the neighborhood elementary school - South Park, where Mrs. Miller imparted an incredible safety and love of learning into my bright little boy. So grateful for the public educators who worked alongside my kids to bring them words and reason and ideas and compassion, I joined the PTA/PTO at South Park and was a frequent volunteer in the classroom. Christian was joined by brothers Roman and Beckham, each 22 months apart.
Since our start at South Park, my kids have gone on to Grandview Elementary, South Middle School, St. Thomas More Middle School, and Stevens High School. In 2019 my nephew lived with me and I had the opportunity to get to know the staff and teachers at Central High School as well. These robust experiences have taught me much about our education system and the generous gifts of energy and expertise that our teachers provide our students. I'm also encouraged by the active parents I've gotten to know through sports, arts, and local community engagement.
An advocate for arts and music, sports and community, I've served on the selection committee for TEDx Rapid City, the Board of Black Hills Community Theatre, the Board of Black Hills Center for Equality, the Board of The Cave Collective, and am a founding member of Verb Storytelling Collective. I have worked with countless non-profits as a graphic designer, fundraiser, round-table creative, and event planner and was honored to lead the wholly crowd-funded remodel and update of Knollwood Elementary in 2019. My son Beckham and I have designed alongside Black Hills Works' artist Cindy for FashionABLE and all three of my boys work with Black Hills Ski for Light to bring the annual Ski Swap to Rapid City.
While my heart is in community building, my passions extend to writing and reading (voraciously!), traveling, kayaking, hiking and volleyball. I am often found on the sidelines of my son Christian's soccer games, Roman's 100 mile+ cycling adventures, and Beckham's artistic creations. I'm a cheerleader of young people's involvement in building a better community and an advocate of serving in acute ways - from shoveling the neighbor's walkways to bringing flowers to celebrate coworkers' success.
I don't know everything about School Board - but I do have a passion to show up, do the work, and get to know those in my community who have vision and voices. I'd be honored to have your vote.
